Shade Tree Commission

The Shade Tree Commission is responsible to advise the Township Committee on all matters pertaining to the planting and care of trees and shrubs on all public roads and parks; to recommend programs to prevent the spread of diseases or pests from trees on private property; and to encourage arborculture.  To achieve this last of its responsibilities, the Commission sponsors the Shade Tree Challenge Grant Program.

The Shade Tree Commission has compiled a list of the BIG TREES in Long Hill Township.  A summary appears on the Big Trees page in the Community section of this website.  Be sure to stop at Town Hall to obtain a complete tour package, which includes a description and identification notes for each species, and a package of maps to locate each of these giants.

TREE CUTTING ORDINANCE

The Shade Tree Regulations Ordinance prohibits cutting down trees along the Township right-of-way and on underdeveloped lots, unless a permit is obtained.  A copy of the ordinance (23-3) is available at Town Hall.

A permit is NOT required to cut trees on any private property that contains an EXISTING one or two family dwelling (23-3.3c1) or on a tree farm (23-3.3c4).

SHADE TREE CHALLENGE GRANT PROGRAM

The Shade Tree Committee is offering a "Challenge Grant Program" to residents of Long Hill Township for the seventh year.  This coordinated challenge is undertaken to promote the planting of shade trees along the Township roads.  In 1999, the Shade Tree Challenge program was responsible for planting 25 new trees in the township.

The Shade Tree Committee will contribute one half the cost of a shade tree; residents are "challenged" to provide the other half.  A nominal administrative fee is also included.  Payment must accompany the application form.

A typical 3 inch caliper shade tree costs approximately $150.00.  The Shade Tree Committee will provide $75.00, the homeowner matches with the other $75.00.  For that amount of money, the proper tree for the location will be identified by the Committee, and the Road Department will plant and stake the tree.  The Committee will guarantee the tree for two years provided that the homeowner follows watering and care instructions.

Homeowner Associations and businesses are encouraged to participate in this program.  Just complete the Application and return it to Town Hall.  A member of the Shade Tree Committee will contact you so that spring planting can take place on a first come first serve basis.
