Recycle Personal Computers

Have you ever considered the environmental impact of disposing of 63 million personal computers a year? That's close to 200 million cubic feet of potential landfill.

It has been estimated that over 50% of all heavy metals found in our landfills can be traced to discarded consumer electronics.
Glass screens (CRTs) in monitors contain 3-8 pounds of lead.
All computers contain lithium batteries, and laptops contain nickel cadmium or nickel metal hydride batteries.
The PC also contains mercury, cadmium, chromium, and some types of flame retardants.
Interesting fact: The federal government buys 7 percent of the world's computers, disposing of 10,000 machines a week, the EPA estimates.

There are 2 ways to dispose of your old PC.

The Telephone Pioneers of America will pick up personal computers (486 or higher) and other related workable hardware for refurbishing and donation to various special needs individuals and organizations. In one of the projects, the refurbished computers are loaded with educational games for children ages 3-5 and donated to pre-schools and day care centers. In another project, the refurbished computers are loaded with software for enabling visually impaired individuals to learn word processing at home and are donated to individuals with such an interest.

The Long Hill Township Public Work Department has a PC recycling program. If we collect your PC, we keep 7-10 pounds of hazardous material out of landfills, and save the landfill cost. There is no cost to you.

Old PCs may be dropped off at the Township Recycling Center any day M-F between 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM. (Just walk in the front door and ask for help.)
