The Garbage and Recycling Calendar shows the "No-Pickup" and "Double Pickup" dates.
Paper   Newspaper, magazines, junk mail, office mail, telephone books, etc. Bundle with twine or put in brown paper bag
Cardboard   Corrugated. No pizza or pie boxes. Break into 24" x 24" size. Stack and bundle with twine.

There is no "official standard" container for recycling in Long Hill.  Use whatever container works for you.
Glass Bottles & Jars   No plate glass, mirrors, ceramics or china. Rinse bottles. Remove caps and rings.
Plastic Bottles   No plastic bags.  Milk, juice, water, cider, soda, alcohol, detergent, fabric softener, bleach, household cleaner.

Rinse bottles and remove caps.
Tin (Bimetal) Cans   All metal food and beverage containers Cleaned, labels and ends removed, flattened.
Aluminum Cans   Soda or alcohol cans. No pie tins or aluminum foil. Rinse cans and flatten.

are picked up once each month
Old household appliances are picked up by the Public Works Department.  This includes ANY large or small scrap metal items - Refrigerators with the doors removed, stoves, washers, dryers, hot water heaters, air conditioners, automobile parts, scrap copper and iron pipe, old tools, metal lawn furniture, metal sinks and bathtubs.   This kind of stuff .

We also pick up used propane tanks.  Be sure they are empty, but DO NOT attempt to remove the valve yourself.

  • If you put Scrap Metal in ordinary garbage, the Township pays (by weight) to send it to a landfill.
  • If we collect your Scrap Metal, we take it to a dealer and HE PAYS US.
  • We'll collect any scrap metal (except recyclable cans).  It saves your tax dollar two ways!
  • IF we collect your PC, we keep 7-10 pounds of  hazardous material  out of landfills, and save the landfill cost.  There is no cost to you. Details.

The Recycling Center is located in Stirling at the south end of Warren Avenue.
Turn off Valley Road opposite Jaeger Lumber.
PERSONAL COMPUTERS, TVs & ENTERTAINMENT ELECTRONICS
TVs & Entertainment Electronics are ORDINARY GARBAGE.  Put them at the curb for the gerbage collector.  (Large console TVs in a furniture cabinet - Call for advice 647-0070).

Old PCs may be dropped off at the Township Recycling Center any day M-F between 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM.  NO CHARGE, and you keep lead and heavy metals out of the landfill.  See our PC Recycling page.

DEMOLITION DEBRIS
Building debris is accepted on designated Saturdays at the Township Recycling Center.  Building debris consists of sheetrock, construction plywood, lumber, masonry, and ceramic bathroom appliances (toilets, etc.).

The price for dumping building debris is based on the size of the vehicle.

Be prepared to pay the attendant.  We are equipped to accept cash or personal checks (local bank) only.  Driver must show proof of residency in Long Hill Township.
TIRES
Tires may be dropped off at the Township Recycling Center any day M-F between 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Purchase Tire Stickers at Town Hall for $2.00 per tire BEFORE bringing the tires to the Recycling Center.  We will accept tires mounted on rims.  (The rims go to the scrap metal dealer - see above.)

COMPOSTING CHRISTMAS TREES
The Composting Center is located at the Public Works Recycling Yard.  It is open on designated Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM in the spring and fall.  See the Composting Calendar for specific dates.

You may bring the following to the Compost Center:

Grass clippings, leaves and brush. Must be emptied from their plastic bags.

Tree branches and small limbs.  There will be a chipper.  Residents may take away their wood chips.  Provide your own labor for loading.  FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS of the attendant to insure SAFETY. 

During January and February the Public Works Department will collect Christmas trees if they are left at the curbside after use.

We collect EVERY DAY, starting January 2.  Exceptions are posted on the Recycling Notices page.  (After March 1, call for a pickup.)

We dispose of the left-over  wood chips  by delivering them FREE to residents who need them for landscaping.  We deliver 5 cubic yard loads only.  How much is that?  5 cubic yards will cover a 25 foot by 25 foot area 3 inches deep.  Sign up with the attendant at the Composting Center or call 908-647-0070.  First come, first served.  Ask for the "website special" - two loads for the price of one.
Open burning of leaves is prohibited in Long Hill Township.

Personal Computers At the township Recycling Yard, or donate to the Telephone Pioneers. See our PC Recycling page.
Motor Oil The Recycling Center no longer accepts motor oil or other related fluids.  However, local gas stations will be accepting it.
Household Batteries It is no longer necessary to segregate ordinary household batteries.  They are now ordinary garbage.
Automobile Batteries Recycle at the garage or dealer where you bought your new battery.  They MUST accept it.
Rechargeable Batteries From electronic equipment, watches, power tools, etc.  Details.  Jaeger Lumber or Radio Shack.
Propane Tanks Propane tanks not equipped with overfill protection devices (OPD) (manufactured before September 30, 1998) cannot be refilled.  This code applies to propane tanks with capacities between 4 and 40 pounds, including the 20-pound tanks used for household barbecue grills.  Read more on the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority Propane Tanks webpage.  Dispose of obsolete tanks at:

Read the instructions for safe transport on the MCMUA website before you attempt to transport unsafe propane tanks.
Worn out Flags Deposit worn out American Flags in the drop box in the lobby at the Public Works office on Warren Avenue.  The American Legion will arrange for their proper destruction.
Eyeglasses and
Hearing Aids
Deposit in the drop box operated by the Lions Club in front of the card shop at Shoprite Plaza in Stirling.
Used Clothing
Deposit in the drop boxes operated by the Salvation Army behind the Community Center on Warren Avenue in Stirling.
Plastic Grocery Bags Return them to the supermarket.
