The Investigative Section works within the Support Services Division. It consists of
three detectives who are supervised by a detective sergeant. The detective sergeant screens
every investigation and is responsible for the assignment and follow-up of cases.
In 2001 the Investigative Section investigated 319 active cases forwarded to the detectives
from the Operations Division. The Investigative Section personnel are on call 24 hours a day
should their response be needed to a crime scene. The section's clearance rate in 2001 was 48%.
This is above the state's average.
The Investigative Section is responsible for conducting follow-up criminal investigations, pre-employment
background investigations as well as background investigations for various permits such as firearms,
soliciting and liquor licensing.
There are a number of unmarked and surveillance vehicles assigned to the Investigative Section.
There is also wide assortment of surveillance and forensic equipment assigned to the section to
assist detectives with accomplishing their mission.
Detectives receive the mandatory training each year in areas such as: Domestic Violence, Firearms
Proficiency, Hazardous Materials control and Use of Force. This traIning is supplemented with
advanced training in Narcotics, Fire Investigations, Computer Crimes, Forensic Examination, etc.
The investigative section also participates in the Identi-kid program which is established to
fingerprint children. The program is offered to pre-school age children in the community after
a permission slip has been signed by a parent/guardian. All fingerprints are returned to the parents
to keep on file at their residence. If you are interested in learning more about this program,
contact Detective Sergeant Steve Hecksel at 908-647-1800 ext. 250.
