The Long Hill Township Police Explorers is a program for young men and women between the ages of 14 and 20 years old who are residents of Long Hill Township.  The program focuses on Law Enforcement and Community Service, and provides the Police Explorer the unique experience of becoming part of the daily operations of a police department.  Other important aspects of the program include learning to become a team player and developing leadership skills.

The Explorers attend two meetings a month, which consist of classroom and practical training exercises.  These sessions include, Motor Vehicle Stops, Building Searches, Hostage Negotiations, Bomb Scene Search, Motor Vehicle Accident Investigations, Crime Scene Investigations, Traffic Enforcement, Telecommunications, Firearms and Range Training.  The Police Explorers also assist full time personnel during Parades, Bike Races, and Community Service programs such as Emergency Management and Crime Prevention.

Explorers who master these program skills can take part in the annual New Jersey Police Explorer Academy conducted at Monmouth University in Long Branch NJ.  This program consists of a combination of police training programs, physical fitness training and competition between Police Explorer posts. 
Thirteen Long Hill Police Explorers attended from July 7 to July 13, 2002.  At the graduation our post was awarded a total of 10 Trophies including the "Directors Trophy" which is the best performing post in all categories.

As a service to the community, in 2002, the Explorers went door-to-door to encourage residents to clearly mark their House Numbers so they are visible from the street to emergency service personnel.  Read more about this important program. 

The Explorers also conduct the Township's annual Dog Census.  They actively participate in the Identi-kid program which is established to fingerprint children at a variety of public functions in the township.  The Explorers often conduct the complete program themselves, releasing officers for more pressing duties.  And they regularly assist with traffic and crowd control at parades, races and street fairs .

The Police Explorers obtain all their own funding through donations, fund raisers and work details.  These funds are used to purchase uniforms, equipment and supplies.

Recently, the Long Hill Township Police Department created the Police Explorer Cadet Program.  This program is intended for boys and girls aged 12 and 13, residing in Long Hill Township who have an interest in becoming a Police Explorer when they turn 14 years old.  The cadets attend the same training programs as the Police Explorers but are limited in most other activities.
