D.A.R.E.

Drug Abuse Resistance Education
   Friendly Lion with D A R E on sweater

D A R E Logo is a drug abuse and violence prevention education program that began in Los Angeles in 1983 and has spread across the country, through urban and rural communities.  The program provides students with the skills to recognize and resist the social pressures to experiment with alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.  It also provides lessons on positive alternatives to destructive behavior, physical confrontation, self esteem and stress-related problems.  It is structured to build positive relationships between the Police Department and the school faculty and community.

On January 10, 2002, the Long Hill Township Police Department will start its 10th year.  The D.A.R.E. program is taught to students in the 5th grade at Millington and Saint Vincent de Paul schools.  Each D.A.R.E. officer has completed an 80-hour instructional course and has been trained to teach and instruct the students throughout the school year using a curriculum provided by the National D.A.R.E. Association.  The program is taught once a week for seventeen weeks.

The D.A.R.E. Program works at building a trusted relationship between the officer and student and opening up an avenue of communication to influence a child's attitude and future course of action.

Meetings are scheduled with the parents of the students to inform them about the program and give them an opportunity to ask questions concerning the instruction provided to the students.  Parents are also encouraged to participate in the program by assisting with instruction at home and with special activities that the children are required to Complete at home.  This type of contact enables the parent/guardian to become involved with the child in a positive surrounding and establishes a strong foundation for the child to resist unwanted behaviors.

Visit the DARE Website for some kids' games and puzzles.

To support the D.A.R.E. program, we hold an annual Pancake Breakfast at the Community Center.  The public is invited.  The next breakfast is April 14, 2002.

For additional information ask at the Police Department for a copy of these abuse-related handouts:

  • "Back to School - a Checklist for Parents"
  • "Teen Alert"
  • "Alcohol is Number One"
  • "Talking with your Kids about Drugs"
  • "Vandalism isn't funny"
For more information, contact Corporal Michael Mazzeo at 908-647-3249 Ext. 234.

Every year for the past eleven years, the Stirling Knights of Columbus have made a generous donation to the D.A.R.E program in Long Hill Township.  The Knights of Columbus sponsor the DARE Pancake Breakfast (held at the Community Center in April).  In 2002, the breakfast raised approximately $600 which is shown here, being contributed to the Long Hill Township D.A.R.E program.

The money supports the annual D.A.R.E graduation, including T-shirts, a poster competition, and other miscellaneous events for the 5th grade D.A.R.E. students.  Community involvement is what makes the DARE program work and continue to have a positive impact with our students.

The Long Hill Township D.A.R.E. program would like to thank the members of the Stirling Knights of Columbus for their generous and continued support.
