Domestic Violence Crisis Response Team

In July, 2001, the Long Hill Township Police Department began to organize a Volunteer Domestic Violence Crisis Response Team.  This will be part of our town's overall program to respond to the needs of victims of domestic violence.  It is being formed with the assistance of the Jersey Battered Woman's Service and the Morris County Prosecutor's Office.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

There were 77,680 domestic violence offenses in New Jersey in 2000, and research shows that domestic violence is underreported.  Children are involved or present during 39% of those offenses.  Domestic violence complaints files after prior court orders issued against the offender increased 17% over the prior year.

Alcohol and drugs are involved in 32% of the reported offenses.  Women are victims in 78% of all domestic violence offenses.  People over the age of 60 are victims in 3% of the offenses, but were 21% of the victims in domestic violence murders.

Everyone has to play a role in ending domestic violence.  To learn more about how you can help prevent domestic violence in your community or workplace, or to learn how to help a friend, call:

  • New Jersey Battered Women's Service - 973-267-4763
  • New Jersey Statewide Domestic Violence Hotline - 800-572-SAFE
  • The LHTPD Crisis Response Team - 908-647-1800 ext 221.
Volunteers on the Crisis Response Team will assist officers investigating domestic violence offenses.  The Team will provide support for victims and their families as well as provide effective intervention immediately following an incident.

Volunteers will be expected to attend monthly CRT meetings and ongoing training sessions.  Team members are on-call during scheduled shifts, to assist domestic violence victims at Police Headquarters.  The volunteers will:

  • Explain the Domestic Violence Act and its components
  • Identify social services which can assist the victim
  • Refer to the Jersey Battered Women's Services
  • Assist the victim to seek protective shelter
  • Explain the dynamics of domestic violence
  • Provide emotional support

Volunteers should have these qualifications:

  • Sensitivity to victims of domestic violence
  • Ability to be non-judgmental
  • Excellent communication and listening skills
  • Ability to respect client confidentiality
  • A clear criminal record
  • A valid driver's license

Bi-lingual volunteers are especially needed, but an additional language is not required.

The Police Department believes that the volunteers in a Crisis Response Team can play a significant role to end Domestic Violence.  Our officers cannot do it alone and we need your involvement.  Please consider joining our efforts to make the community safer for all.

If interested in learning more about volunteering for the Team, please contact Lieutenant Dan Hedden at 908-647-1800, ext. 228.
