Community Services

This page lists the Community Services and Outreach Programs of the Long Hill Police Department.  For more information about any program, click on the link.

"Service Calls"

  • Part of our mission is to do "whatever it takes" to help our residents.  In an emergency, call us and simply ask for help.
    • Locked out of your house or vehicle.
    • Any medical emergency (See the paragraph below).
    • Motorist aid or hazardous road conditions.
    • Fire alarm, burglar alarm or car alarm sounding.
    • Any animal complaint - domestic or wild, alive or dead, inside your house or outside.
    • Vacation Surveillance.
  • All our police officers are certified as First Responders and three are Emergency Medical Technicians.  All of our officers are also certified as Heart Defibrillator Responders.  (The Long Hill Police Department was the first police department in New Jersey to have all police officers trained in the use of the defibrillators.)

We have three of these "defibs" on patrol at all times and our protocol requires that at least one officer possessing a defibrillator must respond to every reported cardiac emergency. The immediate availability of a trained police officer during a cardiac emergencies can make a significant difference while we dispatch the First Aid Squad.

Programs for the Children
  • New Jersey law now requires that every child under the age of eight and weighing less than 80 pounds MUST use a car seat.  We have a certified Child Passenger Safety technician and encourage residents to call upon him.
  • Every May, we conduct a program at the Kindergarten Workshop sponsored by the PTO.
  • As part of our Security Program, we make ID cards for local schools and Senior Citizens Club members.  We fingerprint youngsters at several venues throughout the year.
  • Twice a year, an officer visits every class at every elementary school to reinforce the School Bus Safety message.
  • An officer is in residence at the High School one day a week as part of a low-key "resource" program to help students get comfortable talking with police officers.
  • Qualified officers conduct the DARE drug abuse program in all the 5th grade classes.
  • We have an aggressive Bike Safety Program and we sponsor an annual Bike Rodeo.

Programs in our Neighborhoods

  • Flashing icon that says: NewWe are introducing a Citizen's Police Academy for Long Hill adults - from April 10 through June 19, 2003.  Spend classroom and field time with departmental and county instructors and find out what our Police Officers train for.  Free.
  • Flashing icon that says: NewLong Hill Police support the Crime Victim's Bill of Rights.  Read about those rights, victim/witness protection and a summary of the procedures in the criminal justice system.
  • We have a variety of Crime Prevention programs, including home security surveys, Operation Identification, National Night Out, and more described here.
  • Residents can request additional Vacation Surveillance of their home using this on-line form.
  • The Neighborhood Watch groups in Long Hill cover about one third of the households.  We publish a Quarterly Newsletter on-line, and email Bulletins to the block captains whenever an urgent issue surfaces.
  • In mid-2001, we organized a Crisis Response Team to provide a trained cadre of civilians to handle the emotional and non-police needs of the victims of domestic violence.
  • With the AARP, we sponsor the 55 Alive driving skills program for seniors twice a year.
  • We sponsor an active troop of Police Explorers.
  • Residents are urged to complete the on-line Crime Prevention Survey to share their evaluation of our efforts.

On June 2, 2002, four members of the Long Hill Police Department participated in the Tour De Cure.  This bicycle tour extended 30 miles through Chatham, Long Hill and Harding.  The tour raised $157,000.00 for diabetes research, information and advocacy.

"Team Long Hill Police" was responsible for raising over $1,900.00 for the ADA.  Shown here are team members Aaron Buerstetta, Gary Bauer, John Kiseli and Chris Gelino.
