New Jersey has announced a plan to fight sprawl, over-development and
congestion.
This initiative specifies where growth and new development will be encouraged.
A major goal of the Blueprint for Intelligent Growth (BIG) map is to
provide clear direction to both developers and municipalities,
so planners will be aware of state regulatory issues and funding constraints
prior to proposing new development projects.
At the bottom of this page, we have a small map of Long Hill extracted
from the state map. If you want to examine something specific,
click here for a more detailed map.
- Green is used to identify places where the state will work
to encourage development and to channel growth.
In these areas, the state will streamline and expedite the regulatory
permitting process and dedicate funds for infrastructure and parks.
The state will also use non-regulatory programs to sustain and to
enhance the quality of life for residents and businesses in these areas.
- Note that there are no green areas in Long Hill.
- Note that the immediate surrounding areas in Chatham, Berkeley Heights, Warren and Basking Ridge are heavily green, although most of those areas are already fully developed.
- Yellow indicates a cautious approach to growth.
These are places where natural resource and infrastructure
considerations do not clearly suggest that development should be
discouraged or channeled.
- Red indicates areas with critical natural resources.
The state has set the regulatory bar higher in these Red areas,
and will exact strict regulatory standards to limit growth.
The Red areas are the composite of these restrictions.
- Threatened and Endangered Species Habitat
- Tidal and Freshwater wetlands
- Dedicated Open Space (State, federal, county, municipal and non-profit)
- Pinelands Preservation Area
- Farmland Preservation sites
- Natural Heritage Program Priority Sites
- Agricultural areas
- Other - Yellow areas under 5 acres and completely surrounded by Red areas are reclassed as Red.
