** On the second pickup of the week when it is not recycling you may put out extra items such as mattresses, furniture, carpeting, padding, etc. Call Public Works at 908-647-0070 if you have any questions.
The Garbage and Recycling Calendar shows specific "No-Pickup" and "Double Pickup" dates.
  • Garbage collection begins at 6:00 AM each day (6:30 on Saturday.)  Routes vary, and times of arrival will vary.
  • Residents are cautioned that, in our semi-rural environment, nocturnal wild animals WILL find your garbage if you put it out the night before.
  • Complaints about garbage pickup should be made immediately to the Long Hill Public Works Department at 908-647-0070.

Flashing icon that says: NewFact:  In addition to the costs of the contractor to pick up your garbage, we have to pay an additional $78.90 per ton at the Transfer Station to have the garbage hauled to a landfill in Pensylvania.  That charge includes the operation of the transfer station, contractors to haul the garbage to Pennsylvania, the landfill charges, and the taxes that Pennsylvania imposes on imported garbage.

Long Hill sent 5660 tons of garbage to the transfer station each year.  That works out to about 70 pounds per residence per week.

Our total garbage collection cost for 2005 was $638,000, or about 4% of the town's total expense budget.
