NJ Motor Vehicle Services

    Vehicles are registered each year.  Check the Motor Vehicle Department logofees.  Motorcycles, snowmobiles, Motor Vehicle Department logoATV's, and Motor Vehicle Department logoboats must also be registered by the state.

    When you register your vehicle, you will get Motor Vehicle Department logolicense plates.  In addition to the regular plates, New Jersey also has 70 varieties of vanity plates.  There are Personalized Plates, Special Interest (12) Plates, (Alumni, community and service) Organizational (32) Plates, Volunteer (4) Plates, Profession (Medical and Press) (6) Plates, Special (Historic) Vehicle (2) Plates, and Military (13) Plates.  Motor Vehicle Department logoHandicapped Plates are issued without charge.

    The initial registration is done by the auto dealer, or at a  Motor Vehicle Agency 

Renew your Auto Registration On-Line
    You can renew your registration on-line.  You will receive a notice in the mail.  Collect in one pile, your registration renewal form, Social Security number, insurance identification card, and a credit card.

Validation Stickers - License Plate Decals
    Registration validation stickers are mailed to you with all new or renewed registrations.  The stickers are color-coded by year.  You must affix a current sticker to both the front and back license plate, and they must be visible at all times.

    If you lose a validation sticker, you may obtain a replacement at any  Motor Vehicle Agency .  There is no charge and no forms to fill out.  Bring your driver's license and the current registration for the vehicle.

    If you did not receive the decals with your registration renewal (by mail or on-line), then call the DMV Hotline 888-486-3339 and the decals will be mailed.

Auto Insurance
    Motor Vehicle Department logoAutomobile Insurance is MANDATORY in New Jersey.  Your insurance agent will have the details.

    You must carry Proof of Insurance (a valid, current Insurance ID card or the Declarations page of your Insurance Policy) in the vehicle at all times.

Inspections
    All motor vehicles are inspected every one or two years.  The State will tell you when to get inspected in a notice that is sent with your annual Registration renewal.  Cars (including antiques), trucks, motorcycles, and campers should go to an Auto Inspection Station in  Randolph  or  Plainfield 

     Specialty Vehicles  go to a  Specialty Vehicle Inspection Station  in Morristown.

    There are State-licensed private inspection stations in the Township.  They provide an alternative to the State-run stations.  Private inspection stations will charge a fee.  Listing here is for the convenience of the township residents and does not imply any recommendation or endorsement by the Township.

    Note that the Inspection Station in Somerville is now CLOSED, and the Inspection Station in Morristown no longer inspects cars.
