Driver's License
All the rules.
|
Start by reading the New Jersey
Driver Manual online. It's also a good refresher.
Before you can get a license for the first time, you will have to go to a Motor Vehicle Agency and get a permit.
Then go to a Motor Vehicle Testing Center for written and vision tests.
Then you go to a Road Test Center IN PERSON to schedule an appointment.
Then go back to the Road Test Center to take the road test.
If you pass, you then go back to the Motor Vehicle Agency to apply for a Driver's License.
If you run into trouble along the way, you may have to go to a DMV Service Center to sort it out.
Moving? You must change the address on your Driver's License and car Registrations.
- If you are moving in-state, you have 7 days, and you can
change
your address on-line.
- If you are moving from out-of-state, you have 60 days to visit
the Morristown agency and start all the paperwork.

Non-Driver Photo Identification
cards are also available from the DMV.

Auto Registration and License Plates
All the rules.
|
Vehicles are registered each year. Check the
fees. Motorcycles, snowmobiles,
ATV's, and boats must also be registered by the state.
When you register your vehicle, you will get
license plates. In addition to the regular plates, New Jersey also has 70 varieties
of vanity plates. There are Personalized Plates, Special Interest (12) Plates,
(Alumni, community and service) Organizational (32) Plates,
Volunteer (4) Plates, Profession (Medical and Press) (6) Plates,
Special (Historic) Vehicle (2) Plates, and Military (13) Plates.
Handicapped Plates are issued without charge.
The initial registration is done by the auto dealer, or at a Motor Vehicle Agency

| Validation Stickers - License Plate Decals |
Registration validation stickers are mailed to you
with all new or renewed registrations. The stickers are color-coded by year.
You must affix a current sticker to both the front and back license plate, and they must be visible at all times.
If you lose a validation sticker, you may obtain a replacement at any Motor Vehicle Agency .
There is no charge and no forms to fill out. Bring your driver's license and
the current registration for the vehicle.
If you did not receive the decals with your registration renewal (by mail or on-line), then
call the DMV Hotline 888-486-3339 and the decals will be mailed.
|
| Auto Insurance |
Automobile Insurance is MANDATORY in New Jersey. Your insurance agent will have the
details.
You must carry Proof of Insurance (a valid, current Insurance ID card or the Declarations page
of your Insurance Policy) in the vehicle at all times.
|
| Inspections |
All motor vehicles are inspected every one or two years. The State will tell you when
to get inspected in a notice that is sent with your annual Registration renewal.
Cars (including antiques), trucks, motorcycles, and campers should go to an Auto Inspection Station
in Randolph or Plainfield .
Specialty Vehicles go to a Specialty Vehicle Inspection Station in Morristown.
There are State-licensed private inspection stations in the Township. They provide
an alternative to the State-run stations. Private inspection stations will charge
a fee. Listing here is for the convenience of the township residents and does not
imply any recommendation or endorsement by the Township.
