Licenses are required for all dogs over the age of seven months.  In order obtain a license, a rabies vaccination MUST cover the full year for which the license is issued.  Licenses may be obtained at Town Hall and must be renewed every January.

Rabies vaccination of dogs is required by state law, and the vaccination of cats is encouraged.  A free rabies clinic for the inoculation of dogs and cats is provided by the Board of Health.  In order to obtain a dog license every January, a rabies vaccination must cover the full year for which the license is issued.

A Rabies Clinic will be held November 2, 2002 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon at the Public Works Garage on Warren Street in Stirling.  The shots are free, but you must show a current dog license.  If your dog is not currently licensed, you may purchase a license (for the remainder of the year) at the clinic.  See rates at the top of this page.

Animal bites are investigated by the Health Officer.  He enforces the State Laws for quarantine and lab testing of the animal, and advises on treatment.

Each Spring, the Police Explorers conduct a dog census of the township.  They will remind you to license your dog, and will provide the forms.

Under the Township's Dog Control Ordinance, no person shall permit a dog to run at large.  The Ordinance also requires you to clean up after your dog.  The Police will issue a summons, which carries a fine of up to $50.00 (plus Court costs).

The township contracts with Associated Humane Societies of Newark for animal control.  Call 9-1-1 for assistance.

Some of the lower-lying areas of the Township are vulnerable to mosquitos.  The Morris County Mosquito Extermination Commission inspects and treats these areas regularly.  If you suspect that there is a mosquito problem developing, contact them directly at 973-538-3200.

As of October 25, 2001, the State of New Jersey is no longer testing dead crows for West Nile Virus. If you find a dead crow, you should bag it and put it out for normal refuse collection, or bury it on your property.
